Verizon Wireless Extends Knoxville's Wireless Broadband Network To Additional East Tennessee Areas

KNOXVILLE, TN — Verizon Wireless announced today the company has expanded its Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) third generation (3G) wide-area network in an effort to provide East Tennessee residents with access to high-speed business and entertainment-based services on their wireless phones, laptops and other wireless devices.

Customers in metropolitan Knoxville have enjoyed the high-speed business and entertainment-based services since August 2005 and today, more Verizon Wireless customers in the east Tennessee towns of Athens, Morristown, Sweetwater, Talbott, White Pine and Witt can experience the high-speed wireless service.

"Knoxville was the first Tennessee market to acquire Verizon Wireless' EV-DO technology 16 months ago and has become incredibly popular among area residents," said Jerry Fountain, Carolinas/Tennessee region president for Verizon Wireless. "Verizon Wireless can now offer more residents access to high-speed data connection on their laptops and PDAs and access Verizon Wireless' exclusive V CAST Music services on their handsets."

Verizon Wireless was the first national wireless provider to commercially launch a high-speed wireless broadband network in the United States, and the company's EV-DO network reaches more than 200 million Americans. Verizon Wireless currently offers EV-DO services in all five Tennessee metropolitan areas (Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Memphis and Tri-Cities) as well as Tazewell, Union City and Dyersburg.

In 2006, Verizon Wireless invested $200 million to build, maintain and expand its high-quality network, and since 2003, the company has spent $430 million in the volunteer state to ensure network reliability and expanded coverage and capacity. On a national level, Verizon Wireless has spent $35 billion nationwide over the last seven years to ensure network reliability and expanded coverage and capacity.
