Verizon Foundation Accepting 2007 Grant Proposals In Connecticut

WALLINGFORD, CT — Verizon Wireless, through the Verizon Foundation, is entering its fifth year of supporting eligible Connecticut non-profit organizations. Applications are considered from qualified public charities for work in three priority areas: Domestic Violence Prevention; Literacy; and Technology for Healthcare and Accessibility.

"We live in the communities we serve," said Ken Dixon, Verizon Wireless New England president. "Recognizing the challenges that non-profits face, we want to support their work in creating stronger communities."

Qualified Connecticut 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations are invited to submit 2007 grant proposals. Applications are accepted online only at

In 2006, Verizon Foundation awarded a total of $150,000 to numerous Connecticut organizations, including:

Domestic Violence Prevention: Center for Children's Advocacy, Hartford$10,000 to support an awareness, safety and prevention program regarding teenage dating violence

Center for Women and Families of Eastern Fairfield County, Bridgeport$5,000 to support advocacy services for survivors of domestic violence

Domestic Violence Services of Greater New Haven$5,000 to support counseling services for older teenagers in abusive relationships

Meriden-Wallingford Chrysalis$5,000 to extend domestic violence support services, advocacy and programs

Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury$5,500 to support counseling and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence in Southbury, Middlebury and Woodbury

Literacy: Children's Community School, Waterbury $5,000 to support library program including summer remedial reading project for students pre-K through grade 5

Connecticut Humanities Council, Hartford$5,000 to support outreach literacy program for at-risk children

FSW, Bridgeport$7,500 to support the organization's work with Literacy Volunteers of Southeast Fairfield County (LVSFC)

Meriden Children First Initiative, Meriden$2,500 to support the Senior Buddy Readers program

Yale-New Haven Hospital$5,000 for Parenting Support Programs, including outreach and education about pre-natal and post-partum care

Technology: Concepts for Adaptive Learning, New Haven$4,000 to support the Technology Cascade and Training Program, which targets underserved parents and students for comprehensive computer training

Holy Family Home and Shelter, Willimantic$5,000 to help provide a technology update

Quinnipiac Business and Education Foundation, North Haven$5,000 to support the Career Connection Online website, which links the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce site with businesses in Wallingford and North Haven

Rebuilding Together Hartford$4,000 for website design and software upgrades
