Two Million Minutes Of Hope For Southern California Domestic Violence Survivors

IRVINE, CA — Victims of domestic violence throughout southern California are using more than two million cellphone minutes donated by Verizon Wireless to begin rebuilding their lives. The phones and airtime were donated through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine® program.

"These HopeLine phones do more than call 9-1-1; they are fully functioning wireless phones," said John Palmer, regional president of Verizon Wireless. "With these phones, victims in shelters are able to stay in touch with loved ones and support services; schedule appointments with doctors and interviews with potential employers; and, make a host of other calls as they work to rebuild their lives during a very difficult time."

Agencies receiving free HopeLine phones and airtime since January 2006 include:

  • City of San Diego Family Justice Center, San Diego, California
  • Domestic Violence Unit of the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, Los Angeles, California
  • House of Ruth, Pomona, California
  • San Bernardino County Child Protective Services, San Bernardino, California
  • South Asian Network, Artesia, California
  • Su Casa, Long Beach, California
  • Victim's Services Department of the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, Riverside, California

Since October of 2001 when Verizon Wireless launched its national recycling program, HopeLine has collected more than 3.5 million phones, nationwide. The program has disposed of more than 800,000 pieces of wireless equipment in an environmentally sound way, and refurbished the remaining for resale and reuse. People across the country donated a total of 910,000 no-longer-used wireless phones to HopeLine in 2006.

No-longer-used phones are collected in more than 2,200 Communications Stores across the country. For more information on Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program and on how to donate a wireless phone, visit
