Verizon Wireless Installs Temporary Cell Site In Cooperstown For Hall Of Fame Induction Weekend

COOPERSTOWN, NY — In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for baseball fans and media traveling to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Museum for Induction Weekend, July 27-29, Verizon Wireless is activating a temporary cell site in Cooperstown. The Cell on Light Truck (or COLT) is a fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity, allowing more customers to use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls, send and receive text and picture messages, access the Internet and download games and ringtones. The company placed the COLT in Cooperstown to handle the expected influx of calls and messages sent by visitors and media coming into town for the Hall of Fame induction festivities.

"On important weekends like the Hall of Fame Induction Weekend, traffic on our network increases greatly," said Gene Fassett, executive director of Network for Verizon Wireless' Upstate New York Region. "By activating this temporary cell site, our network is prepared to handle the increased activity that comes with the Hall of Fame Induction Weekend, especially when two great players like Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken are being honored. We anticipate a big surge in voice calls, text messages and picture messages as fans and media use their wireless devices to capture and share the weekend's events."

The temporary cell site is part of Verizon Wireless' continuous effort to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless voice and data services. Verizon Wireless has invested $37 billion in the last seven years — on average, $5 billion every year since the company was formed seven years ago — to increase coverage and capacity, and to offer customers the most reliable service available in the nation. Services include wireless data services such as picture messaging, text messaging, V CAST and V CAST Music, ESPN MVP and wireless Internet access.
