Nearly A Million Minutes Of Hope For Domestic Violence Survivors In Arizona

CHANDLER, AZ — Victims of domestic violence throughout Arizona are using 945,000 cellphone minutes donated by Verizon Wireless to begin rebuilding their lives. The phones and airtime were donated through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine® program.

"These HopeLine phones do more than call 9-1-1; they are fully functioning wireless phones," said Tony Heyman, regional president of Verizon Wireless. "With these phones, victims in shelters are able to stay in touch with loved ones and support services, schedule appointments with doctors and interviews with potential employers, and make a host of other calls as they work to rebuild their lives during a very difficult time."

In the last 12 months, HopeLine phones and airtime were donated in Arizona to:

  • Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence, statewide — 225 phones; 675,000 free minutes
  • Chrysalis, Phoenix — 65 phones; 195,000 free minutes
  • Chandler Police Department, Chandler — 25 phones; 75,000 free minutes

Since October of 2001 when Verizon Wireless launched its national recycling program, HopeLine has collected more than 4 million phones nationwide. The program has disposed of nearly 1 millions phones in an environmentally sound way, and refurbished the remaining for resale and reuse. Approximately 36,000 phones and accessories were collected in Arizona last year.

Anyone with a no-longer-used wireless phone or accessory may drop off the equipment for HopeLine year-round at any of the 2,300 Verizon Wireless Communications Stores across the country. For more information on Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program and on how to donate a wireless phone, visit
