Verizon Wireless Expands Wireless Broadband Network Across Maine

WOBURN, MA — Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, today announced the expansion of wide-area wireless broadband service to several counties across the Pine Tree State through a recent enhancement to 49 existing cell sites.

Verizon Wireless customers in Maine can now access e-mail, corporate data, the Internet and more at faster speeds, check out video on their phones, download music directly to their handsets, and play 3D games as Verizon Wireless has extended its wireless high-speed broadband network in Cumberland, Lincoln, Sagadahock, and York Counties. The company's wireless broadband network allows customers to access e-mail on their laptops and PDAs, and V CAST Video and Music on their wireless phones.

The enhancement to 49 existing sites occurred in the following counties:

  • Cumberland County: 13 total sites covering parts of Baldwin, Brunswick, Casco, Freeport, Gray, Harrison, New Gloucester, Raymond, Standish, Windham, and Yarmouth.

  • Lincoln County: 13 total sites covering parts of Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta, Dresden, Edgecomb, Newcastle, Nobleboro, Southport, and Waldoboro.

  • Sagadahock County: nine total sites covering parts of Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Phippsburg, Richmond, Topsham, West Bath, and Woolwich.

  • York County: 14 total sites covering parts of Alfred, Berwick, Buxton, Lebanon, Lyman, Sanford, Wells, Waterboro, and sections of Routes 202, 4 and 9.

In addition to the new high-speed data coverage along portions of Route 1 in Cumberland, Lincoln and Sagadahock Counties, mobile broadband coverage has also been extended along Interstate 95 with sites in Gray and New Gloucester; sections of I-295 near Topsham, Bowdoinham, Bowdoin, and Richmond; and to the Lakes Region with sites in Windham, Raymond, Casco, Harrison, Standish, and Baldwin.

The network improvements were completed just prior to Verizon Wireless' unveiling of several new phones that will be available during the 2007 holiday season: the Verizon Wireless Juke by Samsung, the BlackBerry® Pearl™, The Venus™ by LG, and The Voyager™ by LG. The Juke is already available in stores while the Pearl will be available on Nov. 8 and the Venus and Voyager are expected to arrive in Maine before Thanksgiving.

"Our holiday lineup is stocked with best-in-class multimedia phones, all running on the nation's most reliable wireless network," said Ken Dixon, president of Verizon Wireless New England. "In 2006 we activated 100 new cell sites across Maine. This latest network enhancement empowers more residents and visitors to leverage our high-speed wireless network for both work and leisure."

Verizon Wireless' high-speed wireless service, which powers its V CAST multimedia and BroadbandAccess Internet applications, is based on the company's Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A network technology.

BroadbandAccessThe company's flagship data service, BroadbandAccess, provides average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps, which means customers can download a 1 Megabyte e-mail attachment — the equivalent of a small PowerPoint® presentation or a large PDF file — in about eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds. Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service allows customers to download files approximately 10 times faster than customers of other wireless service providers that use different broadly deployed network technologies.

V CAST: Video and MusicThe company's high-speed network also enables its V CAST multimedia services, offering customers the ability to download full-song tracks, play cutting-edge 3D games and stream video clips straight to their phones. With content updated daily, customers can watch dozens of on demand videos, including breaking news, weather, sports highlights, and the hottest entertainment clips.

With V CAST Music, Verizon Wireless has built a massive full-song mobile music store that contains more than 2.1 million songs from well-known and independent artists that customers can download over-the-air, right onto their V CAST Music-enabled phones.

Verizon Wireless invested $145 million during the first six months of the year to enhance wireless capacity and coverage throughout the six states of New England, elevating the cumulative network investment in the region to more than $2 billion since 2000. Nationally the company invests more than $1 billion every 90 days to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless voice and data services. The company's ongoing network investment now totals more than $40 billion nationally over the past seven years.
