CHANDLER, AZ — The proof is in the numbers. A wireless device is now basic equipment for golf and football fans. Verizon Wireless customers completed nearly 15 million more calls and data transmissions than normal during the week that brought the Big Game and the FBR Open to Arizona.
"With the influx of an estimated 125,000 visitors for Sunday's game and more than half a million spectators at the Open, our customers were talking, texting and e-mailing using their wireless phones at a record-setting pace," said Tony Heyman, regional president for Verizon Wireless. "Our wireless network in the Valley of the Sun helped customers share the excitement of these events from Glendale to Scottsdale to downtown Phoenix."
Spikes on the football field Thanks to three Verizon Wireless permanent cell sites and one Cell on Wheels mobile cell site surrounding the University of Phoenix Stadium, and a shared in-stadium site, Verizon Wireless customers completed nearly 200,000 voice, messaging and data connections per hour during the peak network activity at the Big Game on Sunday.
That represents a sevenfold spike in wireless calls, text messages, picture and video messages, internet connections and other wireless traffic on cell sites serving the area near the Glendale stadium, compared to a typical Sunday football game during those hours.
Reliability game plan The company's ongoing network investment totals $635 million in the Grand Canyon state and more than $44 billion nationally over the past seven years.
Verizon Wireless added a total of 32 new cell sites in Arizona in 2007 and invested $135 million to expand and enhance its wireless network in the state, including the company's Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A (Rev. A) broadband wireless data network.
The Rev. A data network gives customers the ability to wirelessly download and upload e-mail, corporate data, videos, the Internet and more at broadband-like speeds.
