Go Green With Verizon Wireless And Make A Difference This Earth Day In Oregon
PORTLAND, OR — According to the EPA, recycling 100 million cell phones would save enough energy to power nearly 200,000 U.S. households with electricity for one year. How close do we come? The EPA says fewer than 20 percent of the 130 million cell phones being retired this year will be recycled.
"The good news is each of us can make a difference" says Kelley Kurtzman, regional president for Verizon Wireless. "Since we launched our national cell phone recycling program in 2001, we have kept more than 200 tons of electronic waste out of landfills. To increase that impact, we are asking everyone with a used wireless phone or accessory they're no longer using to turn it in at any Verizon Wireless store. They will not only be doing our environment a favor but also helping survivors of domestic violence in our local communities."
Verizon Wireless offers these wireless tips for going green:
- Recycle a No-Longer-Used Wireless Phone
- Stop by a Verizon Wireless Communications store and give your old wireless phones and accessories from any carrier to the company's HopeLine® phone recycling program. The phones will be disposed of properly or refurbished for resale and reuse, with proceeds going to victims of domestic violence.
In 2007, Verizon Wireless collected more than 15,000 no-longer used phones through its HopeLine program in Oregon. Oregon-based domestic violence programs received more than $105, 000 in HopeLine grants and wireless phones with airtime.
