HONOLULU, HI — Verizon Wireless, builder and operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network, and University of Hawaii Athletics are teaming up for the third year to help curb domestic violence in our community. Fans attending the Hawaii vs. Fresno State women's volleyball game on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. are urged to look around their homes for used wireless phones and accessories which will be used to help survivors of domestic violence through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine® program. HopeLine drop boxes will be located at the main entrance of Stan Sheriff Center from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Through the HopeLine program, used wireless phones, batteries and accessories from any service provider are recycled, or refurbished and sold. Verizon Wireless uses the proceeds to award grants, plus wireless phones with airtime to non-profit human services and law enforcement agencies to aid survivors of domestic violence.
"Verizon Wireless is proud to partner with UH Athletics to make a difference in our community," said Mark Yamauchi, director of Hawaii sales for Verizon Wireless. "One in three women will face domestic violence during their lifetime; so we ask that all fans check around the house and donate their old wireless phones and accessories to help us provide a HopeLine to survivors."
Last year, Hawaii-based domestic violence programs received more than $100,000 in Verizon Wireless HopeLine grants and wireless phones with airtime. Hawaii residents donated more than 5,000 wireless phones to the program in 2007.
