MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Verizon Wireless announced today it invested more than $98 million in 2010 to enhance its network in Minnesota. The investment included adding 14 new cell sites, upgrading equipment on more than 360 existing cell sites to increase coverage and capacity of the company’s voice and 3G high-speed wireless network, and the initial rollout of the nation’s fastest and most advanced 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution) high-speed wireless network in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area.
“Our company is focused on building a reliable 4G network both here in Minnesota and nationwide, but we also remain committed to expanding and improving our 3G network that millions of customers rely on daily,” said Seamus Hyland, president-Great Plains Region, Verizon Wireless. “Customers may use their wireless devices in different ways, but they all have one need in common–a reliable network.”
From 2001-2010, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $714 million on improvements to its network in Minnesota, including the following upgrades made in 2010:
- Fourteen new cell sites were activated enabling more customers to use their phones for social networking; Internet browsing; downloading apps and music; exchanging email and text, picture and video messages; watching high-quality videos; and making calls.
- Equipment was installed at more than 360 cell sites across Minnesota to boost capacity of the company’s advanced 3G high-speed wireless network and improve speed and performance.
- New equipment was installed across the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area for the launch of the company’s’ 4G LTE network on Dec. 5, 2010. The Twin Cities area was one of Verizon Wireless’ initial 38 markets and 60 airports to launch 4G LTE nationwide reaching 110 million people. This year, the company will continue to expand its 4G LTE network to an additional 140 new markets.
