Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Reaches 500th Market: Parkersburg, W.Va.

For the city whose motto is “Where West Virginia Began,” another celebration started today, when Parkersburg, W.Va., became the 500th market in the United States with 4G LTE from Verizon Wireless.

Located at the confluence of the Ohio and Little Kanawha rivers, Parkersburg is the third largest city in West Virginia with more than 31,000 residents. It became the latest market to experience 4G LTE, demonstrating how Verizon’s fast and reliable wireless network reaches well beyond major metropolitan areas.

Parkersburg also marks the milestone that Verizon’s 4G LTE network build out is substantially complete. Charleston, W.Va., was one of the first markets in the country with 4G LTE when Verizon launched its network in December 2010.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network now covers more than 99 percent of Verizon Wireless’ 3G network. The 4G LTE network is available to 298 million people across the country – more than 95 percent of the U.S. population, making it the nation’s largest 4G LTE network.

To celebrate, several activities and events were planned this week in Parkersburg, beginning with a city-wide scavenger hunt and culminating with a special event at the historic Blennerhassett Hotel, a national landmark that opened in 1889 and was built by William Chancellor, a prominent Parkersburg businessman.

As part of the festivities, Verizon Wireless announced $50,000 in HopeLine grants to five area domestic violence prevention agencies.

In addition, guests at the event learned more about the significance of this milestone and what 4G LTE means to residents from Verizon Wireless executives like Region President Mark Frazier and local elected official Sen. David Nohe.

From providing emergency responders with the ability to share vital electrocardiogram (EKG) results in real-time with hospital personnel, to connecting children unable to attend school with their classroom via telepresence robots and even catching your favorite NFL team in action via NFL Mobile, 4G LTE is transforming lives.
