Upgrade Your Menu This Tailgate Season

As football season kicks into high gear, tailgaters transform stadium parking lots into mobile kitchens. But it’s not just about burgers and brats anymore. With a combination of a little creativity and a powerful 4G LTE network, many seasoned tailgaters are using their wireless devices to turn pre-game parties into culinary experiences with elaborate recipes and multi-course meals.

Kaiti George, a registered dietician and director of nutrition and education for the Nebraska Beef Council, said she relies on her mobile devices to quickly search for recipes and take advantage of cooking tools while tailgating or at the grocery store stocking up for the big game. A self-admitted “recipe junkie,” George has shifted away from computer printouts and traditional cookbooks in favor of her tablet and recipe apps that she can access in her kitchen or on the go.

In her latest blog post on Her View From Home, George shares her top five recipe apps and mobile cooking resources.

George highly recommends PepperPlate, saying it is a great tool for staying organized. This app can store favorite recipes, scale portions to serve a specific number of people and even creates a shopping list for game days. It also has a built in timer that can be switched to “cook mode,” so the phone or tablet stays illuminated while cooking.

For less than a dollar, foodies can access the recipes of culinary expert Martha Stewart. The Martha’s Everyday Food: Fresh and Easy Recipes app provides access to daily recipe suggestions. George said this app is user-friendly and doesn’t require any scrolling – the ingredients, instructions and pictures are all on the same page.

The Big Oven app is another option for a large treasure trove of recipes. The app provides access to a quarter-million recipes and is especially useful when looking for ways to spice up tailgating leftovers, she said.

And, for those looking for more than the printed word has to offer, the, iFood Assistant by Kraft, showcases how-to videos and family-friendly, easy-to-make recipes. George said coupon lovers can print, email or add coupons to existing store loyalty cards with the help of coupons.com. The app even provides directions to the nearest grocery store.

With these apps in hand, tailgaters can create a unique game day food experience for every week of the football season.
