Lighten Your Load

Remember when leaving the house for anything – a party, a night out, or a weekend away – meant filling your pockets or purse with necessities? Part of heading out was ticking through a preparedness check-list: directions or GPS, friends’ contact information, camera with charged batteries, roadside assistance membership card, road-trip mixed tape, and the list goes on.

Now, many of those ever important items are stored in a single device. The speed and coverage of robust mobile networks has helped fuel the adoption of smartphones, which surpassed feature phone sales for the first time this year, and the development of apps to allow you to leave the house with a much lighter load.

The need to pack a wallet has been replaced with products like the Softcard Mobile Wallet* which can store all your credit cards, coupons and loyalty cards on your smartphone. Keys? Don’t need those either. Remote start your car with Vehicle Diagnostics by Delphi, which can also unlock, open the trunk and set off a panic alarm – no key fob or keys required.

There are multiple other products and services that can be replaced with the convenience of your mobile device. Between cameras, music players and maps, leaving home with just your smartphone to get you through the day is a reality.

Even cooler than not having to lug these things along, or forget them and miss capturing that special moment on camera, is that the technology for these apps keeps getting better. The camera on a smartphone is most likely the best camera a family owns. On-the-fly photo filtering apps like Adobe Express, make editing and sharing high-quality pictures easy with the speed of Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network. Navigation apps and mobile GPS services are an even better tool for navigation than traditional maps. And now when you’re headed to the beach, the boom box days are over, courtesy of apps like Pandora and a Bluetooth speaker like JAMBOX.

*UPDATE: Google and Softcard have completed an agreement that will leverage the best technology from both companies to create a more robust mobile wallet for consumers. The mobile payment system will keep the Google Wallet name. Read more here.
