HopeLine Donates $10,000 to Asian Americans Advancing Justice

In January, Verizon Wireless unveiled “What’s Inside,” a Lunar New Year-themed short film produced in partnership with The Jubilee Project. For every YouTube “like” the film received during the holiday period, Verizon pledged to make a $1 donation to Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice) from its HopeLine program, which recycles and refurbishes no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories, using the proceeds to support domestic violence organizations nationwide.

Since its premiere, “What’s Inside” received more than 7,200 likes, viewed more than 120,000 times, and garnered a unanimously positive reception from the Asian American community. To celebrate the film’s unprecedented success and demonstrate its commitment to Advancing Justice’s mission, HopeLine announced that it will increase the donation to a total of $10,000.

To learn more about Advancing Justice and how the grant will be utilized, Verizon Wireless recently spoke with Ki Kim, communications director for the organization’s Los Angeles affiliate:

Q: How did Advancing Justice get connected with Verizon?

Kim: Asian Americans Advancing Justice has partnered with Verizon in the past on domestic violence prevention and outreach to Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander and other underserved communities.

Q: What program(s) will the HopeLine grant go towards?

Kim: The grant will support our work providing family law and immigration assistance to survivors of domestic violence within the low-income and limited-English-proficient Asian immigrant community. Our bilingual attorneys are uniquely experienced in being able to provide services, in language, for both family law and immigration issues.

Q: How does Advancing Justice incorporate technology into its work?

Kim: We use the complete suite of Google Apps for nonprofits, SurveyMonkey to conduct constituent surveys, UberConference to manage teleconferences, Asana for group task management, and Wufoo for interactive form submission capabilities.

Q: What can readers do to help support Advancing Justice?

Kim: Readers can find out more about Advancing Justice through our national website and our LA-specific website, where they can also register to be a volunteer or make a tax-deductible donation.
