Verizon Wireless Network, Cloud Services Provide Telemetry for California Shellfish Ranch

From Maine lobster to Maryland crabs and Alaskan salmon, Americans are fond of locally sourced seafood – except, it seems, when it comes to mussels.

Americans consume more than 33 million pounds of mussels imported from Canada every year, contributing to America’s $10 billion seafood trade deficit, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service.

With help from Verizon services, Catalina Sea Ranch (CSR) is setting out to change all that with a state-of-the-art, underwater ranch six miles off of the California coast.

Using Verizon Wireless equipment mounted on a buoy at the ranch, scientists, regulators and researchers will monitor and analyze real-time ocean data. Remote-operated cameras used for underwater inspection will let CSR employees supervise the ranch from the safety – and comfort – of shore. Paired with the video from surveillance cameras on buoys around the ranch, this information allows CSR to monitor their shellfish continuously, and to know immediately if anything needs closer attention.

“By leveraging Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network and Verizon Cloud services, scientists, regulators and others can monitor our shellfish ranch in real time using the Internet,” said Philip Cruver, president and CEO of Catalina Sea Ranch. “This will provide data for collaborative scientific analyses to develop best practices and responsible regulatory criteria for the future of marine spatial planning in U.S. federal waters.”

The data collected from all sources is transmitted over the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network to a cloud-based database that can be accessed online using personal computers and smart devices.

As part of NOAA’s National Shellfish Initiative, Catalina Sea Ranch aims to increase commercial shellfish aquaculture in the United States, while improving ecosystem health.

CSR’s 100-acre project, which will expand in time to include other varieties of shellfish, is expected to produce 2.5 million pounds of sustainable seafood grown 30 feet under the ocean’s surface.

Verizon Wireless’ work with Catalina Sea Ranch is another example of innovation at work, leveraging technology to pave the way for our future.
