Part Two: Hi-tech Wireless Technology Powers 2015 Houston Rodeo

In the second part of our series about hi-tech enhancements at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ (Show), we take a behind-the-scenes look at how the world’s largest livestock show comes together.

Exhibitors from Across the Nation

Every year prior to the start of the Show, thousands of exhibitors from near and far make their way to NRG Center, the place their livestock will call home for the duration of the Show. Historically, stall assignments for the animals were assigned manually, which presented challenges due to the size and scale of entries. Categories include dairy cattle, beef cattle, llamas and alpacas, rabbits, sheep, goats and more. Show officials needed to identify a solution to streamline this rather large task, since correctly assigning the livestock was crucial to the success of the competition.

Hi-tech Assignments

Verizon and the Show worked together to upgrade the check-in procedure for exhibitors by developing an application process using wireless tablets. The new technology and method allows staff to efficiently and accurately register exhibitors by collecting real-time information about the livestock, such as their breed and size classification, and then assigning proper stalls on-site. This new process is not only more efficient than manual registration, but it has also improved the overall experience for both staff and exhibitors. During the 2014 Show alone, there were more than 29,000 livestock and horse show entries recorded, and Verizon's wireless technology provided an innovative solution to keep operations moving smoothly.
