What you’ll be doing...

As a Network System Assurance Engineer, you will be responsible for the advanced installation, operation, and maintenance of switching, data communications, and peripheral equipment associated with the Mobile Switching Center (MSC). You will perform independently and with others in cross-functional projects as necessary. Resolving equipment and software issues is an important part of the role, as is ensuring quality customer service and providing support to our user community. Other responsibilities include:

  • Updating systems with site-specific information, and composing clear and concise reports for system documentation.
  • Performing upgrades and configuring and administering multiple vendor systems.
  • Coordinating the installation, testing, and troubleshooting of transmission facilities (OC48, OC3, DS3, DS1), as well as Ethernet back-haul circuits.
  • Monitoring, analyzing, troubleshooting, and resolving system events for various technologies, including VoLTE, 4G LTE and 3G voice/data, and managing equipment and services supported by the Systems Operations Team, such as transport systems (DACS, fiber nodes, panels, wiring, (TDM, SONET, Microwave), switching systems (Ericcson) packet networks (Cisco, Juniper, Nokia/ALU, Ericcson), multi-services provisioning platforms (Ciena, Fujitsu, Nokia/ALU, Ericcson), Firewalls, ISP choke routers and many ancillary network devices (timing sources, packet monitoring, etc.).
  • Utilizing network sniffers to perform data packet analysis to troubleshoot call flows.
  • Serving as a key resource tasked with proactively monitoring and maintaining assigned network offices, infrastructure, and peripherals.
  • Providing initial troubleshooting/investigation, ongoing communication, and preventative maintenance on critical office systems; power plant (Generators, batteries, rectifiers, inverters), heating and cooling units (HVAC) as well as fire systems.
  • Implementing, documenting, monitoring, and optimizing the elements and configurations necessary to provide wireless network services.
  • Working with our national and regional engineering teams to ensure coordination of all requirements associated with wireless data network services.
  • Providing a disciplined project management approach to network modifications and growth, taking accountability for installation oversight, project scheduling, pre/post network testing, network directives, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Proactively monitoring and reporting on resource utilization and equipment status to assure optimum network availability and reliability as demanded by company performance standards.
  • Utilizing documented information such as IP addresses, port assignments, and connection information for routing and switching equipment in Granite Inventory systems.
  • Reviewing MOP’s and change control processes accounting for modifications to configurations which are compliant to company network security, reliability, and control standards.
  • Providing assistance to national network operations, system performance, and data services engineers/maintenance in the resolution of technical and customer problems.
  • Composing detailed shift and outage reports to management.
  • Managing outage bridges and engaging vendors for outage support.
  • Providing support to localize and isolate faults, detect, and diagnose anomalous behavior.
  • Providing technical support to network assurance teams for troubleshooting network issues and training on new technologies.
  • Participating in new technology and product trials and ensuring timely product rollout and testing.
  • Identifying key performance indicators (KPIs) and proposing enhancements.
  • Managing vendors to ensure timely delivery of new equipment, features, and product upgrades.
  • Working independently and making sound technical judgments in a dynamic environment.
  • Serving as part of an on-call rotation based on location assigned.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Associate’s degree or two or more years of work experience.
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of transmission facilities (OC48, T3, T1, and DSO) and Ethernet back-haul.
  • Experience and knowledge of transmission facilities (Packet, SONET and TDM).
  • Experience with the UNIX/Linux operating systems.

Even better if you have:

  • A degree.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, stored program control, and power.
  • Knowledge in the use of electronic test equipment.
  • Knowledge of data networking protocols including TCP/IP, OSI, Frame Relay, ATM, OSPF, BGP, SS7, MPLS, Session-Initiated-Protocol, Mobile-IP, and other LAN/WAN protocols.
  • Electronics training in one or more of the following fields: telecommunications (cellular or landline) switching systems or experience in LAN/WAN operations and IP connectivity.
  • Experience in the Ericsson 4G cellular infrastructure its operations, maintenance, configurations and trouble resolution, including eNB, OSS, PGW, MME, SGW, and HSGW.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the operations, maintenance, configurations and trouble resolution of the following MSC based equipment: Cisco 6500 and Nokia 7750 and 7705 routers and switches, Tellabs 5500 and 532 cross-connect systems, Comverse Voice Mail Systems, and Fujitsu fiber-optic equipment (4500, 7500, 9500), as well as DC power systems.
  • Intermediate training in at least three of the following areas: data communications, digital communications, operating systems and applications, telecommunications, computer support, project management, and/or power/electrical.
  • Networking background and industry certification (Cisco/Juniper) preferred; routers, switches, IPv4 and IPv6, knowledge of call flows.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office product suite.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience with shell, AWK, SED, and other common system functions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem solving skills.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
