What you’ll be doing...

The Staff Counsel position is a key partner in helping Verizon successfully navigate and comply with the procurement and ethics rules applicable to federal, state and local government entities and contracts. The Staff Counsel – Public Sector will join a team of attorneys providing legal support for all aspects of Verizon’s business with public sector customers. A successful candidate will have extensive substantive experience with both public procurement law and the sale of telecom services and emerging technology to government. In this role, the staff counsel will be expected to interact regularly and effectively with senior management, think strategically and effectively manage a high volume of work.

Key responsibilities of the Staff Counsel will include:

  • Monitoring, shaping, and educating peers and clients regarding regulatory, legislative and industry developments that impact Verizon’s ability to secure and grow public sector business.
  • Advising on a range of legal, regulatory and compliance issues, including cybersecurity standards and requirements, procurement integrity, conflicts of interest, disclosure and reporting obligations and other issues that arise in the public procurement setting.
  • Working with internal stakeholders to design or modify policies, practices and systems that enable the sale and delivery of Verizon products and services in a way that meets public sector procurement and technical requirements.
  • Advising on the requirements of requests for proposals, including sizing and developing mitigation strategies to address legal, compliance and operational risks.
  • Performing all of these duties with accountability and a high sense of urgency.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • JD degree and six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Bar membership and needed licenses.
  • Experience in public procurement law at the federal and/or state/local level.
  • Willingness to travel.

Even better if you have:

  • Excellent research, writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop, evolve and deliver effective public sector training materials and presentations to government sales teams, as well as support organizations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and demonstrated ability to close matters in an ethical, urgent and timely manner.
