What you’ll be doing...

We are looking for a Staff Engineer to be part of Verizon's Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) Solutions team whose primary responsibility will be to lead the development of novel research prototypes in emerging technology areas related to 5G and MEC (e.g. Distributed Programmable Logic Controllers, Machine Vision in Industry, Industrial Internet of Things, Smart Factory, In-building Private 5G, etc). You will work closely with senior technologists and product architects to ideate new applications of emerging technologies, plan prototypes and proofs of concepts, lead the software development to support these prototypes, demonstrate the results to senior-level / executive-level management and support the transition of PoCs into product development teams.

You must be versatile and flexible, with significant professional-level-experience in multiple programming languages (C/C++, Java, node.js, Python) with a focus on distributed computing, industrial controls and message queuing mechanisms. Further, you should have embedded systems development experience, electronics development (e.g. ARM Cortex, AVR, etc.) experience and/or wired and wireless network-related software development experience.

  • Work with senior team members to help define novel applications of edge computing that can lead to product innovation and advance Verizon's intellectual property.
  • Design software architectures and write related software to implement and prototype new innovative concepts for demonstration to product / executive teams.
  • Lead a small team of developers in agile software development to produce the proofs of concepts ideated by the senior team members.
  • Subject matter expert and apply advanced techniques as it applies to industrial automation to build new product solutions.
  • Communicate to senior leaders and customers the technical aspects and value of the projects.
  • Requires individual to be a senior developer/architect and lead software developers in creation of prototypes, specifically focused on edge computing and industrial controls (e.g. Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)) and other emerging prototypes involving in-building 5G and on-premise or nearby Multi-Access Edge Compute (MEC) based functions.
  • Individual will be guiding other software developers in the development and delivery of prototypes, demonstrations, customer trials and hand off for scaled product build.

What we’re looking for...

You will need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have:

  • A Degree.
  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Five years of experience in software design and development, especially in web and cloud technologies.
  • Knowledge of multiple software programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Java, Python) and operating system development (e.g. Linux, Android/iOS, RTOSs) to apply to the development of prototypes and PoCs.
  • Experience leading software development using Agile/Scrum methodologies, with tools such as Jira, Confluence, Stash/Git.
  • Knowledge of industrial control programming languages (e.g. Ladder Diagram, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram, etc).
  • Ability to use linux container environments (e.g. Docker, LXCs, Kubernetes) and Linux service scale out techniques through use of microservices, Kafka and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, InfluxDB, Neo4j, etc.).
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work hands-on in a lab environment on edge compute and industrial mechatronics hardware.
  • Experience in using Linux, Windows and Mac OS operating systems, using both command-line and graphical user interfaces.
  • Experience in using Jenkins, Subversion, Git, JIRA and Confluence.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Good understanding of various network protocols including HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, UDP, SMTP, DNS, WebSockets.
  • Good understanding and experience with Message Brokers (Kafka, MQTT, RabbitMQ).
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Public cloud experience (AWS, Azure, Google).
  • Virtualization infrastructure experience (OpenStack, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with PLCs, DCSs.
  • Experience developing for industrial applications.
