What you’ll be doing...

International Fiber Planning Engineer will be responsible for long term planning related to activities affecting infrastructure and network operation on all Verizon International fiber routes. The Fiber Planning Engineer will have understanding of both legacy and next-generation network architecture, equipment to ensure infrastructure is in place and to support network growth and transformation. Based on business needs and growth plans Planning Engineer will categorized assets as Directional or Non-Directional. Develop plans for Non-Directional routes to migrate traffic and remove from network as part of overall optimization and cost savings. Candidate should have a passion for building relationships and leading cross functional teams and must be able to act as a communication bridge with the ability to engage with stakeholders to understand and respond to business objectives.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing plans and communicating the directional assignments for all domestic US fiber routes and assist other planning organizations with targeted deployment plans and timeline development.
  • Developing and implementing plans to vacate non-directional routes by the appropriate contract termination date. This includes leading cross-functional teams as they work through network decommission plans and problem solving inter-dependency issues that arise between these organizations.
  • Coordinating planning activities with the operational teams including Right Of Way, Contract Management, and Global Real Estate to address the impact of changes to the facility portfolio.
  • Proactively tracking of Next Gen and legacy equipment planned for Directional routes and communicate with peer organizations to make responsible decisions for capital spending.
  • Monthly, quarterly, and annual capital budget planning, monitoring, and decision making.
  • Regularly interactingwith ROW Contracts, Engineering, Carrier Management, and Business Strategy teams to provide guidance on site disposition (to purchase/sell a route or renew leases for short/long term timelines) and risk analysis for potential forced decoms and fiber optic cable degradation.
  • Regularly interactingwith contacts from all business units to investigate fiber swap or co-build opportunities and implementation activities across the company.
  • Regularly participatingin planning initiative meetings to refine the route planning process.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related discipline
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience
  • Extensive network knowledge of long haul and metro fiber backbones and architecture

Even better if you have:

  • Master’s degree or appropriate technical certifications
  • Six or more years of infrastructure fiber cable engineering, testing, installation, maintenance, or planning
  • Legacy Telecom engineering or planning experience including: DS1, DS3, SONET, OC-n, Voice Switch, or Data Platforms
  • Next-gen optical equipment knowledge, Unified transport, Ciena, Infinera, Cisco
  • Extensive network knowledge of Verizon’s long haul and metro fiber backbones and architecture
  • Comprehensive understanding of Verizon back office systems used for circuit provisioning, fiber cable capacity management, geo-based mapping systems (FIM, GRIP, CoFFEE) and fiber optic performance standards
  • Ability to lead and facilitate meetings both in-person and remotely
  • Excellent decision making skills (making appropriate use of available information and data; making sound decisions with minimal support from Manager; and being responsible for specific projects or definable portions of larger projects or processes.)
  • Balance technical and business requirements when making decisions
  • Ability to thrive in dynamic work environment and maintain performance level.
  • Experience with providing recommendations to senior management and presenting to executives.
  • Proficient in office computer applications: Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Excellent analytic, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Superior organizational and planning skills (setting and communicating priorities; anticipating workload impact on resources of both self and team; delegating where appropriate; consistently following up on outstanding items; and providing focus in meetings and discussions).
  • Flexible and creative (seeks out and attempts alternate solutions to resolve issues, and seamlessly adjusts to a dynamic, changing business environment).
  • Willingness to travel.
