What you’ll be doing...


This position requires an individual with experience in a maintenance or operations setting, and development of processes, strong project management skills, ability to work effectively across other support organizations. This position is highly visible and requires interaction with leadership in Finance, Sourcing, Legal and other organizations. The position requires significant partnership with field operations teams which make use of vehicles every day. This position requires high engagement, ability to set and influence strategic direction and at the same time attention to details to mitigate risk and ensure key business deliverables are met.

This position will be responsible for leading and developing a team of direct and indirect teams, in addition to moving to standardized program management processes and tools for maintaining a fleet over 25,000 vehicles. This position will drive the organization with long term strategic planning, staffing, operational efficiencies, cost reduction initiatives and utilization optimization. This position will simultaneously lead long-term projects in additional to urgent immediate demands pertaining to various Fleet strategic initiatives.

This position will be responsible primarily for leading the Maintenance function within Fleet Operations, and across hundreds of shops in the northeast. It requires short, medium and long term focus on service-levels (availability), managing total-cost-of-ownership through the actions of your team, and evolving priorities both within the maintenance operation and due to changes in the externally facing businesses. The position requires leadership and development of a team whose primary mission is to plan, implement and manage maintenance business-models tailored to ensure an effective balance between speed, quality and cost to support multiple internal partners in revenue and service-impacting activities. These efforts are measured through availability/utilization of assets, efficiency of resources, and quality of work and customer service. The position requires one to identify, manage and continuously improve upon benchmarks set internally and based on industry practice/data. This position will supervise a direct staff of 5-6 employees (and hundreds of indirects) to ensure departmental goals are met. The ideal candidate will have the acumen to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities while maximizing employee engagement and development.

  • Define strategies to execute on priorities, assess and develop employees, build a team that will lead efforts to review, establish and/or implement processes and procedures for Fleet Operations.
  • Drive strategic planning for Fleet Operations Maintenance team; development, analysis and implementation
  • Drive efficiencies into the operation, tactically (day-to-day) and strategically for best in class performance
  • Manage within the Expense and Capital budgets and timely identification of upward pressures or cost-reducing opportunities as trends develop.
  • Manage all aspects of leading a fleet operations environment including setting appropriate goals, defining strategies to execute on priorities, and manage relationships with stakeholders.

What we’re looking for...


  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years of maintenance operations experience or related field
  • Minimum of 5 yrs. experience in managing a large work group with demonstrated performance as well as managing remote locations
  • Demonstration of strong leadership and program management skills
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills and good analytical skills, with specific experience presenting information to executive leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to package and sell ideas and influence across all levels of management and across organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a blend of in-source and out-sourced service providers
  • Proven ability to drive results and actions for continued improvement in meeting business deliverables, processes, and program management
  • Proficient knowledge of “Lean” and “Six Sigma” methodologies and Change-management best practices
  • Ability to create action plans and lead to resolutions
  • Ability to own issues/risk decisions and manage on an ongoing basis
  • Ability to identify opportunities to streamline process and create efficiencies

Desired Skills & Experience

  • MBA
  • PMI certification in Project Management highly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability leading large complex project from inception to implementation
  • Experience in managing a union-represented workforce
  • Working knowledge of fleet equipment, mechanical/electrical/hydraulic technology and/or engineering
  • Working knowledge of statistics and other tools to design, model, assess and manage business processes and reliability for best outcomes
  • CAFM or comparable industry certification
  • Proven ability to manage issues related to job-skill development, tooling, technical/equipment knowledge, industry-best practices and legal/policy-driven considerations associated with maintenance of DOT regulated vehicles in safety-sensitive operations.
  • Experience in developing and managing “quality” and “reliability” programs around a variety of mobile equipment and effectively setting benchmarks for cost, performance and value-added through participation in various industry groups
