Verizon Robotics provides flexible solutions that deliver faster time to insight and reduced cost through automation. We sell software, robot-specific cellular plans, consulting and robotic equipment. Our products cover robot command and control, mission planning and fleet management, imagery capture, modeling and processing, and cellular connectivity for drones and ground robots, across indoor and outdoor uses.

About the role. Within Verizon Robotics, the Solutions Team is responsible for designing, integrating, and delivering complex robotics capabilities. In addition, the team hosts the Verizon Robotics’ research and development (R&D) program and manages our robotic R&D centers and test sites. We’ve deployed numerous solutions that include connecting helicopters to the Internet, flying drones remotely during disasters, connecting robotic dogs to Verizon 5G, modelling complex cellular data, growing enterprise robotics programs to operate at scale, and streaming live video from robots to VR goggles over Verizon 5G edge. We are hiring a Robotics Solutions Communications Engineer to integrate robots into cloud based systems, enterprise wireless systems, software defined wide-area networks, and cellular networks. In this role, you’ll work with robots and drones in a variety of networking and computing environments.

  • Design, deploy, and test embedded communications systems on embedded or single board computing Linux/Nuttx and similar operating systems across various hardware architectures (e.g. ARM and x64).
  • Identify necessary components and then connect and test pluggable M.2, mPCIE, or similar modules associated SIM cards, antennas, and supporting hardware into carrier or system boards.
  • Integrate across systems and boards using USB, SATA or similar cabling solutions as well as over Ethernet, fiber, or other networking physical layer implementations.
  • Configure associated device routers, switches, and wireless access point hardware both in embedded robotic solutions and enterprise-grade on-premise networking equipment.
  • Configure relevant elements of VPN, SD-WAN, VPC network, WANs to include routing and naming elements.
  • Configure private network credentials, parameters, and manage associated private cellular network SIM cards, access tokens, or other technologies.
  • Support application layer engineering integration and troubleshooting by identifying connectivity, configuration, and other related issues.
  • Design, configure, and execute network performance tests.
  • Design, configure, and document network elements, remote support approaches, and partner or outsourced management of designed systems so they can be maintained by other engineering teams or 3rd parties.
  • Assist Solutions Delivery team with on-site deployment of robotic solutions network elements.
  • Provide Tier 2 or Tier 3 technical support to deployed technological solutions.

Where you'll be working:

This hybrid role will have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days as set by the manager.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong understanding of the OSI 7 layer model, and working experience at each layer
  • Experience configuring network equipment, to include: routers, switches, WiFi Access Points, cellular modems/routers.
  • Working knowledge of the Linux network stack.
  • Experience setting up secure transport protocols: IPsec tunnel (ESP and AH), VPN, etc. on multiple compute platforms and operating systems.
  • Experience running network testing software both at the Network and Transport layers for testing KPIs such as: throughput, latency, jitter, etc.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40%.

Even better if you have:

  • Seven or more years of experience in a combination of network operations (NetOps), development operations (DevOps), or system administration.
  • Five or more years of experience in network configuration, network management, and network design.
  • Experience working with virtualized hardware and cloud based networks.
  • Working experience configuring and optimizing SD-WAN elements and their IP connections.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded compute devices, i.e. SBC.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded compute devices deployed to vehicles, robots, drones, aircraft or other mobile or autonomous cyber-physical systems.
  • Knowledge of the cellular stack, both the core network (3GPP EPC/5GC) and the radio interface (eNB/gNB).
