What you’ll be doing...

Is leading the design of this future where you see yourself? Do you have a vision of how humans and autonomous robots can connect to improve the world?

Verizon Robotics is seeking a Director of Design to lead the product design teams in building existing and new software platforms to help our customers interact with autonomous robots at scale – in the sky and on the ground. This exciting group combines the resources and access of Verizon with the attitude of an agile tech startup. We’re looking for a dynamic design leader to help us go harder, better, faster, stronger for 2022.

• Ensure that the design processes are maintaining a high level of creative execution while retaining space for innovative, divergent exploration.
• Implement a cohesive product design platform for mobile and web. Own the entire design process and systems used to efficiently build products with consistency. Set the design vision and while keeping an attitude that every pixel matters.
• Provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for one or more design teams. Drive design efficiency without sacrificing creativity. Facilitate a culture of delivery.
• Represent design all the way up the organizations, including Verizon. Show strategic leadership by presenting the impact of design strategy in achieving our mission across all departments. Collaborate with the VP of Product and your peers in engineering, marketing, and sales, to shape the experience, usability, and value of connected robots.
• Develop and execute strategies that are informed by user research, business objectives, and strong design sensibility.
• Create a design culture that fosters trust, respect, and collaboration.
• Establish structure for design meetings such as reviews, design system updates, and workshops.
• Work with individuals to identify and develop their strengths, helping them pursue opportunities that enhance their talents.
• Constructively address situations, issues, and behaviors. Initiate difficult conversations and clearly communicate corrective actions.
• Recognize and flag stress and fatigue. Work with individuals to determine support that might improve their wellbeing.
• Support the hiring and onboarding of new design team staff and contractors.
• Conduct and document employee performance plans, mid-year, and end-of-year performance evaluations.
• Manage relationships and accountability with design agencies.

Where you'll be working...

This hybrid role will have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days as set by the manager.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have...

• Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
• Six or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have...

• A track record of mentoring and developing designers to do their best work
• Experience managing designers that work with cross-functional product teams in an agile / scrum environment.
• Experience with building and maintaining design systems.
• Equally comfortable with big-picture strategy and pixel-level design feedback.
• Experience leading design teams working on enterprise software products.
• Deep interest or experience in robotics or data analytics.
• Experience working for a sub-brand within a large organization (Oculus|Meta, XBOX|Microsoft, etc.)
• Deep understanding of design tools used in a collaborative setting, ideally Figma.
