About our team:

The Verizon Design Team shapes brand-defining experiences for a range of consumer-facing products and services. One in three Americans uses Verizon services, so your work will have a meaningful impact at a massive scale. The team consists of the brightest designers, design strategists, researchers, and product managers collaborating to shape the customer experience.

About this role:

As a Principal Designer, you will work as an individual contributor and design leader responsible for partnering with teams to create strategies and processes that benefit the user and drive business outcomes.You will lead programs focused on the global navigation system, taxonomy, and information architecture and your work will span the design process, from problem-framing and design definition to Agile development and implementation, so your work may include everything from mapping the ideal customer journey to producing designs for development.In addition to shaping products you’ll play a critical role as a thought leader and mentor, sharing a strong point of view, elevating design dialogue and shaping the design process within teams and throughout Verizon Design. Designers, from your team and across the organization, look to you for direction. Design leaders and business partners look to you for a fresh perspective.While this role does not require formal management responsibilities, you may lead a project team and have direct reports.

This is a hybrid role based out of our New York office that balances the option to work from home with assigned office days as set by your manager.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Facilitate and inspire creative concepting. Challenge teammates to responsibly push the boundaries during concept phases.
  • Lead activities to identify appropriate design problems, solutions, and opportunities within project brief and client context.
  • Generate multiple credible design solutions. Explore, refine and document solutions thoroughly.
  • Develop, evaluate and refine concepts based on learnings from prototypes. Create prototypes to demonstrate design intent or feasibility.
  • Support planning and facilitation for iteration and critique to improve solution quality and support user, business, and technical requirements.
  • Recommend and facilitate design activities/methods to guide teams and clients through ambiguous project periods.
  • Identify activities and communications necessary to deliver digital product strategy ideas to a client. Build a shared understanding of how the method and tone of communication impacts the project.
  • Create transparency into your decision-making process, and recognize valid challenges to your point of view. Externalize choices and behaviors so that the team can understand the rationale.
  • Deep understanding of specific activities and processes for auditing, identifying, testing, and specifying Navigation and way-finding patterns for App and Web.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Consumer-facing digital design leadership experience.

Even better if you have:

  • Deep expertise of wayfinding and navigation patterns for app and web.
  • Several years of experience leading programs that focus on navigation.
  • Familiarity and appreciation for different methods of data collection, testing, and analysis.
  • Comfortable adapting to toolsets: Invision, Sketch, Figma, G-Suite, testing platforms, etc.
  • Advanced degree in design, business, or library sciences.
  • Eight or more years of consumer-facing digital design leadership experience
  • History of building and maintaining navigation models at an enterprise level.
  • Experience defining and driving the vision of experience programs and/or partnership based programs.
  • A track record of gaining the trust and respect of others so as to build and lead world-class teams in transformational and high growth environments.
  • Comfort managing concurrent projects in a fast-based, results-driven environment and high-level strategic planning with tactical daily execution.
