Install, update, test, initialize and maintain telecommunications services and equipment at Company central offices and other locations.  Ensures the integrity of central office based equipment. Operates, maintains and monitors switching equipment, computer systems and data networks and tests, and analyzes and interprets data to troubleshoot issues and take corrective action.  May be required to interact with customers to resolve and close reports. Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records.  May work in a centralized environment or work independently with minimum supervision.

May also be assigned power related duties as a primary responsibility.  Power related duties include but are not limited to: troubleshooting, all preventative maintenance, and repair of power systems/equipment.  Serves as first responder during natural disasters or any other threat to network security.


Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

A. Operating personal computer and electronic devices (smartphones, laptops, notepads, etc.) to receive and complete work instructions from supervisor or other designated employees in connection with the provisioning and maintenance of telecommunications service.

B. Planning jobs and determining materials and tools to complete assigned tasks. Adjusting priorities and informing work team when problems arise.

C. Analyzing and troubleshooting network device configuration and control.

D. Analyzing troubles, testing, repairing and turning up of circuits. 

E. Operating and maintaining all types of local and toll switching equipment, data network equipment, and associated peripherals.

F. Assisting with or performing system and equipment installations, acceptance testing and initialization. Performing and verifying generic upgrades, system reconfigurations, hardware changes and system relocations.

G. Assigning cable pairs and installing interfaces to ports, and associated computer equipment. May be required to run cables for coax, Input/Output (IO) ports on systems and perform power cabling. May inspect, clean and replace fiber optic equipment, cables, and jumpers and take light level readings.

H. Removing or placing connections on wire distributing frames using solder, wirewrap, and punch down terminal connections.

I. Performing daily backups and routine monitoring of switches, computer systems and data networks to ensure they are operating at optimal levels. Tracking, analyzing, and reviewing system alarms, logs, trouble reports, traffic measurement reports, etc. Performing tests, analyzing data and interpreting work orders, manuals and wiring diagrams to identify network failures/errors, and locate and clear trouble conditions in switching equipment, computer systems, data networks and associated peripherals. Isolating and documenting the root cause, and engaging the appropriate resources to quickly resolve the issue. 

J. Performing coordination and testing functions associated with services provisioning activities.

K. Maintaining accurate and complete records. Preparing and updating logs, records and files regularly. Extracting routine system and customer reports as required.

L. Working with field technicians utilizing test sets and systems while trouble shooting and installing services.

M. Verifying switching equipment and equipment translations.

N. Managing, monitoring, and troubleshooting switches and network end devices, as well as copper and fiber-based transport platforms.

O. Utilize knowledge of fiber hygiene and how loss, reflectance and dispersion affect service.

P. Maintaining equipment inventory.  Package, ship and track return of defective equipment.

Q. Contacting external and/or internal customers may be required.

R. May be required to work for extended periods of time and to travel and work in various buildings.

S. May be exposed to chemicals and gases when performing some work functions.

T. Adhere to Verizon Clean, Neat, Safe and Reliable network and workplace standards.

U. Power related duties include but are not limited to: 

a) Work in and around high voltage areas, with live AC switchgear and DC power plants.  Required to wear appropriate safety equipment.

b) Operating and maintaining power equipment including central office generators for power failures, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair of DC Power plant, turbines, diesel and gasoline engines, including fuel system, engine tanks, automatic transfer switches, and associated alarming mechanisms.

c) Performing acceptance testing, activation, repair and maintenance of power plant equipment.  Interpreting office drawings, schematics, wiring lists, wiring diagrams and equipment drawings.  Following standard practices in the performance of job duties.

d) Troubleshooting and repairing single and 3 phase power equipment (rectifiers, fuel delivery systems, and switch gear.

e) Troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of Diesel and Gasoline engines and turbines.

f) Troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of Automatic Transfer Switches.

g) Analyzing defects, installing, replacing, testing, repairing and maintaining power plant circuits and equipment by using complex testing equipment, computers and various documents.

h) Performing routine and repetitive maintenance such as inspecting, cleaning, testing, lubricating, etc.

i) Maintaining power plant equipment at customers' premises and at other than regularly assigned company locations, which will require driving a company vehicle between locations.

j) Keeping detailed equipment records and maintenance logs.

k) Move, connect, and activate portable power generators.

l) Moving and/or lifting materials generally not exceeding 100 lbs.

m) May be required to run cables for power IO Ports on systems, and perform power fusing.

V. Meeting annual performance objectives.

W. May be required to perform additional duties and tasks as required by the Company.


A. Tests– Results obtained in standard tests for this position must meet minimum requirements established by the Company, in accordance with Company policy.

B. Must meet safety-related requirements including but not limited to those standards of safety imposed by OSHA, state agencies, manufacturers and/or the company.

C. Medical evaluation may be required.  Must be able to perform physical requirements of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation, including, but not limited to, perceiving differences in wire cable colors, distinguishing audio tones, climbing ladders and working aloft using tools, meters and other test equipment, and moving and/or lifting a minimum of 50 pounds (generally not exceeding 100 pounds for power responsibilities) following safety guidelines/using safe work practices.  Must be able to work in cramped spaces, with minimal lighting when power fails, and areas where temperature exceeds 85 degrees or is under 32 degrees.  May work in an office environment while sitting at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.

D. Security background investigation may be required.

E. Where driving is required, a valid state driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.  Where a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required, the candidate must possess and maintain a valid/current CDL as required by the work state.  If the candidate does not have a valid CDL at the time of hire, he/she will receive related, Company-provided Department of Transportation (DOT) training.  The candidate must pass a drug and alcohol test and qualify on the DOT CDL physical, written, and skills qualifications tests to retain the job.  

F. Where driving is required, must meet applicable federal and state standards for operating the size vehicles covered by this job title.

G. Must be available to work scheduled tours designated by the Collective Bargaining Agreement and/or the needs of the business.  Associates may be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, non-scheduled and non-consecutive days, as the needs of the business require.  Tours are subject to change at any time based on the needs of the business and that are in accord with labor contract requirements.
