Many people do not realize that their phone and mobile devices need to be protected just as their home computer.

Smartphones are so much more than phones they are computers and hold passwords, banking information, photos, videos and more. Be sure your information is safe by protecting your mobile device.

What is Malware?

Malware is software that is malicious. Malware may contain a virus, trojan horse, worm, keylogger, spyware or adware. These types of software are able to disrupt your device and gather the information that is stored. Malware may allow unauthorized access to your systems which can disable your phone or allow remote access.

Why is it Important to Protect Your Mobile Device Against Mobile App Malware?

As with any technology there are vulnerabilities. A 2011 survey from Lookout Mobile Security found that mobile users are now 2 1/2 more times likely to encounter malware than just six months ago. They also found that hackers were using increasingly sophisticated means to access personal data and take control of phones and money. Protecting your mobile device is more important than ever.

Steps to Take for Protecting Your Mobile Device

Because it is important to protect your mobile device, I wanted to make sure that you were aware of a few things to help you. Keep these things in mind when downloading apps or ringtones to your mobile device be sure to consider the following:

  • Check who the developer is and look for reviews. Do not download anything from unknown developers.
  • Pay special attention to apps that are free. Many apps are “free” in exchange for allowing collection of data.
  • Read the permissions. Do not click “I accept” without reading the details.
  • Create secure passwords. Strong passwords make it harder for hackers to access your information.
  • Beware when on public wi-fi. Accessing social networks, email accounts and bank information over a non-encrypted public connection makes you vulnerable.
  • Use anti-malware software to protect your mobile device.

What Security Apps Should I Use?

Lookout mobile security is free and there is also a paid premium version available. The free account allows you to scan for malware and backup your data online. It also uses GPS to locate your phone if it is lost or stolen. A premium account is $3 a month or $30 a year and gives you remote locking and wiping capabilities, enhanced backup and a privacy advisor which gives you a detailed, easy to read list of what each app can access.

AVG Antivirus is another free option. AVG antivirus will scan your phones apps, settings, media and contacts for malware. There is lock and data backup available also.

Treat your phone like a computer full of personal information and be sure that you are protecting your mobile device. In protecting your mobile device, you are putting up an invisible wall to stop hackers from getting to your device. Remember this is important also if you connect any of your mobile devices to your computer for syncing.
