Alibaba Group is Looking for a Few Good MBAs

Alibaba Group Executive Chairman Jack Ma likes to say that the e-commerce giant is an Internet company that just “happens to be in China.” Ma has made it clear that the international expansion of Alibaba’s businesses is a key strategy as the company executes its corporate mission to make it easy to do business anywhere.

This global focus by Alibaba increasingly extends to its employees. To build a deep bench of future company leaders who have an international mindset, Alibaba Group today announced the launch of its first talent-recruitment program offering on-the-job training to MBA students from top business schools worldwide.

The Alibaba Global Leadership Development Program (AGLD) is structured to give participants a broad, strategic understanding of Alibaba’s extensive businesses by working for two years in a variety of jobs at Alibaba Group’s Hangzhou, China, campus. Unlike many corporate MBA training programs that place participants in specific jobs or corporate subsidiaries, the AGLD calls for trainees to rotate through core Alibaba business units in six-to eight-month stints, gaining experience in different disciplines such as e-commerce operations, cross-border logistics, and business development. Each participant will be mentored by a senior member of Alibaba’s leadership team.

The program “is a long-term initiative which we are very committed to,” said Annie Xu, general manager of Alibaba U.S. “Its launch marks a big step to start developing a pipeline of leadership talent that the company can benefit from globally.”  Upon completion of the program, successful participants will be offered permanent jobs as part of Alibaba’s growing international operations.

What does it take to join? “We are looking for people who have a strong sense of entrepreneurship, leadership and integrity,” Xu said. “They need to be positive, creative, resourceful and at the same time resilient in the face of uncertainty, changing dynamics and constant challenges given the fast pace and innovative nature of Alibaba as a company.”

Alibaba Group is now accepting applications from MBA students in their second year of studies for the AGLD full-time program as well as an internship program. Candidates must be proficient in both Mandarin Chinese and English and must have at least two years of work experience.
