In Lesson 3 | The Black Greats of Art: Photography and Video, students will explore the basic principles of photography and video, while celebrating the contributions of notable contemporary Black photographers Gordon Park and Lorna Simpson. Throughout this lesson, students will learn how to interpret contemporary art, how to use select artmaking tools, and will draw inspiration from the methods used by the featured artists to develop their own technique.

 

Note:  Lesson plans are designed as a 4-part series, which should be followed in consecutive order. 

 

Lesson Duration: Each lesson plan includes 2-3 class sessions that will require no more than 30-60 minutes of class time per session. Teachers can use any additional class time to extend in-app exploratory moments or class discussions.

  • Learn how to interpret and discuss works of art and their themes
  • Deeply explore an artistic discipline through the lens of artistic movements and the portfolios of legendary Black artists from the art history canon
  • Learn about various art-making tools and how to use them to develop a personal art-making technique inspired by the methods used by the featured artists
