Extinction: Back from the Brink
This lesson leverages the 5G Labs Virtual Museum and Open Access collections at the Smithsonian Institution, specifically the Extinct Animals Collection. Students learn about five mass extinction events that occurred on Earth and the possibility of a sixth on the horizon. Students collaborate to organize key geological events and species according to the fossil record and prepare an action plan to help protect a currently endangered species from extinction.
AI and the Ocean (Lesson 1 of 5): Bon Voyage, Robot!
Students will gain an introduction of the course and the optional accompanying book, "Plastic, Ahoy!" by Patricia Newman. The book chronicles the research vessel, New Horizon, and its scientists and researchers on a journey to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Students will exercise critical thinking and creativity as they start to explore their own ideas about Robotics and how their ideas could be applied to scenarios on the New Horizon voyage or in their own life.
Deep Space Water Efficiency
In this life science-focused activity, students will pretend to have internships as environmental scientists as they research why exactly water is essential for life. They will collect and analyze data to help them calculate about how much water they use on a daily basis and consider where cuts can be made. Following the virtual experience, students will calculate approximately how much water each person would need per day to survive on Mars. They will consider how much of this water could be reused, and they will determine how much water the people on Mars need to survive until the shuttle returns from Earth. Student groups will ultimately develop a plan that maps out water use until the shuttle returns, and they will review each other’s ideas as they search for the most efficient and realistic plan.
