Identify devices that require a filter

Check if you need to install or replace a phone line DSL filter with the Verizon Troubleshooter.

Filters block the DSL signal from reaching your telephone, fax, or answering machine. Except for your DSL modem or wireless router, every telephone machine sharing the phone line that has Verizon High Speed Internet requires a filter. If filters are missing, you may experience reduced speeds as well as static or hissing on the telephone line.

Note: Using more than five filters can reduce the quality of your Verizon High Speed Internet service.

Where do I install filters?

Don't install filters on DSL modems or wireless routers

Other common devices that need filters:
  • Regular phones
  • Cordless phones
  • Caller ID units
  • Answering machines
  • Fax machines
  • Dial-up modems used for DSL backup or point of sale equipment
  • Satellite TV dialers
  • Meter readers. Check with your gas and electric company.
  • Monitored security systems that use the DSL phone line (check with your security company to determine if this is necessary)
