The Verizon View on Wholesale Technology Trends For 2020

As ever, at the start of the year, we like to take a moment to think about how we are going to be able to ‘work smarter’ in the coming months. From the Verizon Partner Solutions’ perspective, our mission is always about helping our customers to move their business forward, partnering for success to help them make the most of the latest and greatest innovations in the technology space.

To that end, we’ve again thought about those technology trends that are most likely to impact our wholesale customers in the coming months. We did the same thing last year, and thought our customers would be looking at five key areas:

·         Network flexibility, and the transaction guarantee;

·         Security effectiveness, and particularly network-level security hygiene;

·         Scalable, global solutions, and how organizations can use foundational technologies to reinvent their operations, and then leverage disruptive technologies – AI, ML, automation, robotics, AR, VR, edge computing and more - to transform their future potential;

·         Putting the customer in the center of the business opportunity, using data to inform human engagement to create relationships;

·         The importance of a strong network foundation to deliver innovation.

Looking back, we think we got this just about right. So what about 2020? What do we think will be most impactful for the wholesale world in the coming months?

Mainly, we think 2020 is all about executing on enterprise digital transformation. Early digital adopters are now beginning to show real traction and the focus in 2020 needs to be on how organizations can use technology to help them deliver on their customers’ business objectives in uncertain times. They need to improve agility, security and performance, and focus on the customer experience – and both basic and niche technologies are the answer.

We think our customers – and their customers - will be looking at seven key areas in 2020:

1.       The network is foundational: In 2020, network connectivity will be more critical than ever in enabling organizational innovation around the globe.  As companies continue to focus on using technology to differentiate themselves from the competition, their ability to deliver innovation is paramount – and secure, high capacity, global network connectivity is their delivery mechanism.

2.       Speed is a need: The ability to move quickly to seize opportunities and mute distractions will determine business success. Virtualized network services will continue to gain traction to support business expansion when opportunity presents.

3.       Data is gaining gravity: We need to think about the edge – applications will increasingly need to go to where the data sits. We’ll also want insight and control into those applications, to prioritize and manage data flows.

4.       Customer-centric connectivity is key: How will organizations choose to work in a world of customer-centric connectivity? In 2020, we will have more alternatives for voice and video integration than ever before. Organizations need to keep the customer experience front and center, or risk damaging their reputation and brand.

5.       There are no short cuts when it comes to technology investments: Organizations need to focus on their basics, but high-tech initiatives will also find their niche. It’s all about the customer experience, and the innovations of a few years ago – VR, AR, AI – are now affordable. But focused investments are required, considering the personalized needs of the customer.

6.       It’s time for a digital CIO: Humans can’t process what’s going on in increasingly complex enterprise IT environments. So we need an immersive, virtualized, AI-driven dashboard view, presenting data in a people-literate manner that humans can understand.

7.       Security needs pragmatism: We can continue to expect that the bad guys will try to breach our defenses. We need to focus on security basics, and zero trust architectures, to keep information secure and privacy intact.

We think we’re going to see innovation acceleration in 2020. But we also think organizations need to think hard about their innovation plan to make it work. As the global wholesale partner of choice to deliver a better network, we at Verizon Partner Solutions (VPS) have years of experience when it comes to partnering for success, enabling our customers with the latest in technologies to support their business needs. We’re looking forward to working with our customers in 2020, and beyond.

I think the most important message for me in 2020 is that we work best together – Verizon Partner Solutions’ vast expertise and experience is very well placed to support our customers’ ambitions, but it’s in working together with our customers that we do our best work. I’m looking forward to an exciting year.
