What you’ll be doing...

As a Principal Engineer you’ll be responsible for the on-boarding and operationalizing of applications within Verizon Video Network. You will be accountable for the System Administration for all upstream and downstream network elements and will function as a subject matter expert in automation and system administration and leverage those skills to drive efficiencies in the network. You will also be responsible for the Security of the hosted network devices and ensuring they meet Verizon’s security standards. Other responsibilities associated with this position include:

  • Leading the implementation of feature designs and upgrades and providing feedback and engineering solutions to improve reliability and performance.
  • Partnering with all key stakeholders to ensure new features and\or fixes are swiftly tested and rolled out with no negative impact to customers or system performance.
  • Leveraging automation to eliminate manual processes and providing near real-time visibility into system health and performance.
  • Identifying deficiencies and quickly developing solutions in a DevOps manner to improve reliability and to add operational efficiencies in the network.
  • Providing subject matter expertise in system administration and automation.
  • Leading current and future projects to completion.
  • Hosting and/or actively participating in meetings with key stakeholders regarding roadmap planning and performance testing.
  • Mentoring junior team members on system design, cloud computing, and networking concepts.
  • Providing concise weekly updates to management and effectively present project status to leadership.

In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days set by your manager.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years work experience as a systems/network engineer.
  • Experience with Linux systems in an enterprise production environment.
  • Experience managing or administering networks, video architecture, conditional access systems, and/or ad insertion systems.
  • Experience with enterprise/network/video architecture monitoring tools or applications.
  • Willingness to participate in 24x7 escalation and support duties including holidays and weekends.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Experience with Adaptive bitrate and MPEG DASH.
  • Experience with Cisco, Juniper, and Arris networks
  • Experience with Security management and remediation.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve IP network troubles in the physical, data link, and network layers.
  • Ability to maintain configuration of devices in a network management monitoring system.
  • Expert knowledge of services, network devices, knowledge base solutions, and system monitoring tools.
  • Proven customer communication and interaction skills.
  • Ability to perform challenging assignments under limited-to-no supervision.
  • Ability to quickly analyze situations, identify problems, and provide solutions.
  • Ability to lead and drive projects to completion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Three or more years of relevant cable, satellite, and telephony transport industries knowledge.
  • Three or more years of analog/digital video, audio, and multi-channel experience.
  • Seven or more years of experience in telecommunications.
  • Proficiency in data analysis using SPLUNK.
  • Proficiency in Perl, Python, Shell, and/or Ruby.
  • Experience with relevant automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
  • Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP networking, load balancing, firewalls, IGMP, HTTP, SSL, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Experience with enterprise/network/video architecture monitoring tools or applications.
  • Experience with conditional access systems and digital rights management.
  • The ability to think independently and derive creative solutions to complex problems.
  • The ability to troubleshoot, resolve, and communicate issues to other employees and management.
