Very simple to set up. Worked immediately. Signal strength in my area is at two, but every once in a while I do get 1 out 3 bars. The one thing I do like is the clarity of the calls, no static etc. Oh and that is another thing, dial tone. Yes, there truly is a dial tone just like Plain Ole Telephone Service(POTS). Just a cautionary note, when switching from POTS to wireless, you may not receive calls on your Voice Gateway, until Verizon disconnects POTS to your location. You can use the Voice Gateway to make calls, but your POTS phone is the one that will receive the call, until Verizon disconnects. As to icons, use the menu selector buttons, minimalist, but practical.

Does this unit connect to ethernet via the jacks on the unit to provide a backup to sustain landline service if the tower is down, or do they have a different pupose?

The Ethernet jack on the Verizon Voice Gateway is not used as a backup Fios/landline fallback if a tower goes down. This device connects traditional analog landline phones to Verizon's 4G LTE or 5G wireless networks. It acts as a bridge, so you can use standard home phone equipment with cellular voice instead of traditional wires. We currently have one landline number for 3 wireless desktop phones; 1 hardwired wall phone and 1 hardwired desktop phone. Will this device provide phone service to all five phones we have in the house?

Is the Battery for backup or is it just powered by battery

The Verizon Voice Gateway battery is strictly for backup power during a power outage, not for daily operation. Under normal conditions, the device plugs directly into a standard wall outlet for its regular power.
