Start Satellite SOS (Apple)Satellite SOS on your Apple® iPhone® allows you to contact emergency services in the event you are out of a cellular or Wi-Fi coverage area.
Before you begin
To use Satellite SOS, the following requirements must be met:
- Must be outside with a clear line of sight to a satellite.
- Must have a Satellite Messaging capable device.
- Active service with cellular data turned on.
- Satellite messaging won't work if the device is in Airplane Mode.
- Must be in the contiguous United States orHawaii and Alaska (may not work in parts of Alaska).
- Requires iPhone 14 or newer and iOS 18 or newer.
Ensure to set up emergency contacts and Medical ID before leaving a coverage area.
Steps
- Attempt to call 911.
- If the call won’t connect, the phone provides the option to send an emergency text via satellite. (This may require iOS 16.4 or later).
- TapEmergency Text via Satellite.
- If not an emergency, there may be an option to contact a roadside assistance provider.
- Texts can also be sent to a local emergency number by navigating to the Messages app and sending a message to the local emergency number.
- TapReport Emergencyand complete the questionnaire.
- When prompted, selectNotifyorDon’t notifyto send (or not) info to emergency contacts.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. Keep the device outdoors and with a clear line of sight to the sky.
- Follow any instructions provided by the emergency personnel.
