Troubleshoot Battery / Charging Issues

If your Apple® iPhone® or iPad® isn't charging properly or the battery isn't lasting, learning how to troubleshoot can resolve common problems and extend its usability.

Before you begin

Ensure the device is properly connected to an Apple-approved adapter / charger and a valid power source (preferably an AC adapter and not a car charger). For help identifying approved chargers, check out this Apple Support article.
Ensure the charging port contains no water damage or corrosion. Water damage is not covered under warranty.
Check the charging port for bent or broken pins. Physical damage is not covered under warranty.

Steps

  1. Verify that the device and charger display the appropriate charging / LED indicator.
    • If the battery level is extremely low, the display may remain blank for up to 5 minutes before a low battery image appears.
    • If the device displays a low battery image, it may take up to 20 minutes before the device powers up.
    • A battery that is completely drained should be charged for a minimum of 15-20 minutes.
  2. Press and hold the
    Power button
     for 3-5 seconds to verify your Apple device doesn't power on.
  3. If the device doesn't respond, try these steps:
    • For devices with a Home button, press and hold the
      Power button
       and
      Home button
       for approximately 10 seconds then release.
    • For devices without a Home button:
      1. Press and quickly release the
        Volume up button
        .
      2. Press and quickly release the
        Volume down button
        .
      3. Press and hold the
        Power button
         for approximately 10 seconds then release until you see the Apple logo.
    • Attempt to power on the device using an alternate charger.
