Unsend and Edit iMessages

Unsending or editing iMessages® on your Apple® iPhone® is useful for correcting typos or retracting messages you didn't mean to send, helping to ensure your texts are accurate and clear.

Before you begin

The following steps below apply to when an iMessage is sent / received on an iPhone running iOS 16 or newer. iMessages require a data or Wi-Fi connection.
SMS messages (indicated by differing colors) can’t be unsent or edited.

Unsend iMessage

  1. Open the
    Messages app
    .
  2. Tap the desired conversation.
  3. Touch and hold the desired message bubble then tap
    Undo Send
    .
    You can undo a recently sent message for up to 2 minutes after sending it and a note confirming that you unsent the message appears in both conversation transcripts.

Edit iMessage

  1. Open the
    Messages app
    .
  2. Tap the desired conversation.
  3. Touch and hold the desired message bubble then tap
    Edit
    .
    You can edit a recently sent message up to 5 times within 15 minutes of sending it.
  4. Edit the message then do one of the following:
    • To send the edited message, tap the
      Checkmark icon
      .
      The message is marked as 'Edited' in the conversation transcript.
    • To revert, tap the
      X icon
      .
