Format SD / Memory Card via PC

Here's how to format or erase your SD / memory card using a computer.
Formatting permanently erases all data on the SD / memory card.
  1. Insert the SD / memory card into the computer's internal card reader.
Alternatively, insert the SD / memory card into an external memory card reader then ensure that it's connected to the computer.
  2. Open
    Windows Explorer
    .
    Using the computer keyboard, press
    Windows+E
    (windows key logo +E)
    keys
    .
    For Windows 10, right-click
    Start
    then click
    File Explorer
    .
  3. From Windows Explorer, locate then right-click the appropriate removable storage drive.
  4. Click
    Format
    .
  5. From the "Format" screen, ensure that the following options are configured as desired:
    • Capacity
    • File system
    • Allocation unit size
    • Volume label
    • Quick Format
Quick format removes files from the SD / memory card but it doesn't scan for bad sectors. The option should only be enabled when the SD / memory card has been formatted previously and you are certain that the card isn't damaged.
Depending on card capacity, Quick format may take between 15 seconds and 2 minutes to complete. If Quick format isn't selected, the process takes longer (20 minutes for an 8 GB card).
  6. Click
    Start
    .
  7. From the 'WARNING: Formatting will erase ALL data on this disk?' prompt, click
    OK
    to confirm.
  8. If presented with the 'Format Complete' prompt, click
    OK
    .
