Activate / Set Up Device

Activate your iPhone XS / XS Max to get started. This ensures you can make calls, send messages, and connect to the internet.

Before you begin

If this is an upgrade or your phone was not activated when purchased, refer to the activate a new iPhone.
If troubleshooting, don't restore the device until all testing has been completed.
If the device has been set up with an incorrect Apple ID erase all content and settings.
Using your previous iPhone ensure the Find My app is disabled then power it off; If you don't have a previous iPhone, proceed to steps below.

Steps

  1. Press and hold the
    Power button
     on the top-right edge to power the new iPhone on.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to choose language then tap the country or region.
  3. From the Quick Start screen, tap
    Set Up Without Another Device
    .
  4. Connect to the Wi-Fi network.
    If activating using eSIM, a Wi-Fi network is required.
  5. From the Data & Privacy section, tap
    Continue
    .
  6. To set up Face ID, tap
    Continue
     then follow the onscreen instructions.
  7. Enter a 6-digit passcode or tap
    Passcode Options
     to select a different method (e.g., 4-Digit Code, Don't Use Passcode, etc.).
  8. Tap a setup option then allow up to 30 minutes for the restore to complete:
  9. Enter your Apple ID and password then tap
    Next
    .
    If you have an Apple ID already in use on another device, a verification code is sent to that device; you must enter this code to proceed with activation.
    If you don't have an Apple ID or have forgotten your sign in info, tap Forgot password or Apple ID or Create a Free Apple ID.
  10. Review the Terms and Conditions, tap
    Agree
     then onscreen prompts (i.e. Update Your iPhone Automatically, Location Services, Siri, etc.) to customize additional features.
  11. Once setup is completed, on the Welcome to iPhone screen swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get started using your iPhone.
