Activate / Set Up DeviceActivate your iPhone 17 Pro / iPhone 17 Pro Max to get started. This ensures you can make calls, send messages and connect to the internet.
Before you begin
iPhone 17 models should be connected to a Wi-Fi network as the primary method for activation. If Wi-Fi isn't available, you can continue without Wi-Fi when presented.
iPhone 17 models do not have an option for a physical SIM card and can only be activated with an eSIM (electronic SIM card).
From your old iPhone, ensure the Find My app is turned off then power the device off.
If you don't have enough storage space and temporary iCloud storage is needed, refer to this Apple Support Page (iOS 15 or newer is needed).
If this is an upgrade or your phone was not activated after purchase, refer to activate a new iPhone.
If troubleshooting, don't restore the device until all testing has been completed.
Steps
- Press and hold thePower buttonon the new iPhone to power it on.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to select a language then tap the country or region.
- Select the preferred size (e.g., Default, Medium, Large) then tapContinue.
- From the Quick Start screen, tapSet Up Without Another Device.
- Connect to a Wi-Fi network.
- Confirm your phone number then tapNext.
- Review the Data & Privacy info then tapContinue.
- From the Age Range screen, select an age range (Child, Teen, Adult).
- To set up Face ID, tapContinuethen follow the onscreen instructions or Set Up Face ID Later.
- Enter a 6-digit passcode or tapPasscode Optionsto select a different method (e.g., 4-Digit Code, Don't Use Passcode, etc.).
- Tap a setup option then allow up to 30 minutes for the restore to complete:
- Enter your Apple ID and password then tapNext.From your new phone, enter the verification code sent to your registered secondary device.If you don't have an Apple ID or have forgotten your sign in info tap Forgot password or Apple ID or Create a Free Apple ID.
- Review Terms and Conditions, tapAgreethen follow the onscreen prompts (e.g., Update Your iPhone Automatically, Location Services, etc.) to customize more features.
- If activating a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and you're prompted with a Transfer Phone Number screen, tap one of the following:Only applies when transferring from an iPhone 11 or newer running on iOS 15.6.1 or later.
- Transfer From Nearby iPhone
- To compete setup, swipe up or tapGet Started.Wait 2-3 minutes for the Status Bar at the top of the screen to change from 'No Service' or 'SOS' to 'Verizon'.
