How do I test my Fios Gigabit Connection speed?
A router speed test can be used to measure the speed being delivered from the Verizon network to your home router. To test the speed of your Fios Gigabit Connection, go to verizon.com/SpeedTest and run a router speed test.
If you just ordered a Fios Gigabit Connection and have a same day due date, it generally takes a few hours to have your service supplied. Please wait until end of day before you test your Fios Gigabit Connection.
Not seeing the subscribed speed?
To get the best possible speed make sure your device:
- Meets or exceeds the recommended system requirements
- Is connected to the Fios Quantum Gateway using a wired Gigabit Ethernet Connection
- Is not running on battery power or configured using a power saving profile
- Browser is updated to the latest version (you may experience slower speeds when testing on some browsers due to the browser's internal processes)
- Has a limited number of applications running, presence of security software (e.g. firewall, and anti-malware) can affect your speed test; it is advised that you temporarily turn off the security software while running a speed test. Once the test is complete DO NOT FORGET to turn the anti-malware software ON again.
Note: If your device doesn’t meet the recommended specifications for Fios Gigabit, it’s likely you won’t see your subscribed internet speed when running a device test. As higher speed products like Fios Gigabit Connections become available, your device’s capability to support these high capacity speeds becomes critical.
Also, when running a speed test on a Wi-Fi device, you are testing the speed of your Wi-Fi network, not the broadband speed delivered by your Fios Gigabit Connection provider.
What are the device specifications?
The minimum device specifications for Fios Internet are:

Fios Router and Fios Quantum Gateway both support Fios Gigabit Connections.
What is the maximum speed supported on a Wi-Fi connection?
The speed on a Wi-Fi connection depends on the Wi-Fi standard your device supports. As a general guideline, maximum theoretical speeds supported by the existing Wi-Fi standards are:
- 802.11 a - Up to 54 Mbps
- 802.11 b - Up to 11 Mbps
- 802.11 g - Up to 54 Mbps
- 802.11 n - Up to 150 Mbps
- 802.11 ac - Up to 800 Mbps
Note: These speeds are best-case scenarios and most devices may not achieve these speeds due to limitations on the number of Wi-Fi antennas, antenna orientation etc. on the device.
Unsure of what Wi-Fi standard your device supports – refer to the device manual or call the device manufacturer.
Several other external factors may cause interference and affect the speed of your Wi-Fi connection, including:
- Distance from the router
- Kitchen equipment (microwave ovens, refrigerators, etc.)
- Physical obstructions such as walls and floors
- Other home gadgets like garage door openers, cordless phones, baby monitors
- Other Wi-Fi networks in the vicinity
- Any 802.11b device on the network (it is advised you remove this device from the network)
Identifying the specific interference is difficult and sometimes impossible. To get the best possible Wi-Fi signal, place the router in the location where you connect most using Wi-Fi and place away from physical obstructions and other devices that may interfere with the Wi-Fi signal. During times when you need the fastest connection possible, use a wired connection to the router.
My computer does not meet the recommended device specifications for Fios Gigabit Connections.
Fios Gigabit Connections may still be the right choice for you if you have multiple devices simultaneously connecting to the internet and actively engaging in streaming or uploading/downloading videos and photos. By getting a connection with high bandwidth, you ensure that each device gets enough bandwidth for its individual usage.
