What you can say:

“Hey, I saw something was flagged on your device. Do you think you can show me what you’re looking at?”

What you can do together:

Depending on the topic, look at the search or site together, if appropriate. Talk about what sparked their curiosity and what a better way to explore that topic might be.

Try this:

Let them know you’re open to any and all questions.

  • Create a shared “Ask Me Anything” list you revisit weekly, so they won’t be as likely to search the web for inappropriate content.
  • Encourage talking about sensitive subjects with you first. Explain why: The internet is full of answers but it’s hard to tell what is and isn’t true.

If this keeps happening:

It’s normal to be curious. Try asking:

  • “Is there something you want to know, but you didn’t know how to ask?”
  • “How can we explore that topic in a safe, open way?”
