What you can say:

“Hey, I saw there was some online activity while you were in class. Were you trying to look something up?”

What you can do together:

Review how they use their device at school.

  • Was the online activity helpful, distracting or something they weren’t sure about?
  • Talk through what’s allowed by the school and what to do when they feel the urge to scroll.

Try this:

Set shared expectations for online use during the school day.

  • Follow school policy first and, if within school guidelines, then decide when it’s okay to go online (lunch, study hall) and when it’s not.
  • Demonstrate boundaries that you’ve set for your own device use at home too.

If this keeps happening:

Online distractions are common.

  • What makes it hard to stay offline at school?
