MCI Employee Donations, Pledges and Company Contribution to Tsunami Relief Exceed $1.1 Million
Donation Milestone is Achieved in First Five Days of Month-Long Fundraising Drive
MCI Asia Pacific Region Employees Continue Efforts in Support of Humanitarian Relief
ASHBURN, Va. January 12, 2005 - MCI, Inc. (NASDAQ:MCIP) and its employees exceeded $1.1 million (USD) in individual donations, pledges and a matching company contribution in the first five days of a month-long fund raising drive to assist those affected by the recent earthquake and tsunamis. MCI initiated its campaign last week with pledges of $50,000 to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and $50,000 to the American Red Cross.
Recognizing that financial assistance is the most immediate need for relief efforts in the tsunami-ravaged areas, MCI began its worldwide employee fundraising effort by offering a three-to-one company match for employee donations and pledges up to $500,000. Employees have the opportunity to make donations to the MCI Tsunami Relief Fund through January 31. The company will distribute the funds to the relief agency designated by its employee-donors, which include the American Red Cross, UNICEF, the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund in India, the Indonesian Red Cross Society, the President's Fund for Disaster Relief in Sri Lanka, and the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund in Thailand.
"As our thoughts and prayers continue to be with all who have been impacted by these natural disasters, we remain focused on raising funds that will help provide basic health and well being for those in southern Asia and eastern Africa," said Michael D. Capellas, MCI president and CEO.
In addition to fund raising, MCI Asia Pacific region employees are working to help provide humanitarian relief for individuals and families affected by the tsunamis in neighboring cities and countries. For example, after surviving the tsunami that struck southern Thailand, the general manager of MCI Singapore has remained on the scene to assist in the collection and distribution of daily necessities (food, cooking implements, cooking oil, simple gas stoves) to local survivors and families in the devastated Khao Lak area.
MCI offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Australia and India are collecting food, blankets, clothing and other supplies. MCI has more than 1,000 employees in this region, and many mobilized immediately after the natural disaster occurred, volunteering to provide help in the various impacted countries.
MCI Asia Pacific is also reaching out to relief organizations to donate communications services, prepaid calling cards, audio conferencing services and communications equipment.
