MCI WorldCom Provides Free Telephone Calls For Hurricane Floyd Victims

Kinston, North Carolina, October 1, 1999-MCI WorldCom and the
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), dispatched a portable
communications center equipped with 24 telephones and a satellite
up-link facility to Kinston, North Carolina to provide free local and
long distance phone calls for hurricane victims, residents and
emergency officials today. This mobile phone bank is located near the
Kinston airport and the Bassett Walker Plant at 834 Cedar Fresh Road.
Free Shuttles will run from Lenoir Community College to the Basset
Walker Plant today. Private vehicles will also be allowed to enter the
plant. The Mobile Telephone Facility (MTF) will operate every day from
8am EDT to midnight.

efforts by supporting those who have been affected, said Jerry

connect with insurance companies and relief agencies."

The emergency Mobile Telephone Facility (MTF) is a 54-foot, state
-of-the-art mobile communications trailer that includes 24 individual
phone ports inside the facility. The MTF is completely self-sufficient,
with onboard generators that provide electricity, heating and cooling.
The trailer is providing emergency communications through MCI
WorldCom's IDB Systems Satellite Technology, making it the ideal
vehicle for assisting residents or relief agencies in need of telephone
communications in a devastated area. The rig containing the emergency
phone bank has been used in the past to assist victims of the Oklahoma
City Tornadoes, displaced victims of Hurricane Andrew in Florida, and
the Northridge earthquake in California, among others.
