UUNET's new service offers affordable broadband Internet access to small to medium sized business community TORONTO, Ont. Internet World - February 9, 2000 - UUNET, an MCI WorldCom company and a global leader in Internet services to business, today announced the nationwide deployment of business class ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) Internet access services - UUlink ADSL. Beginning with widespread availability throughout Ontario and Quebec, the service provides economical, higher-bandwidth Internet access to the small to medium business community.
"ADSL technology is dramatically changing the online experience for businesses and consumers alike," says Tal Bevan, President of UUNET's Canadian operations. "Small businesses are demanding big-business Internet capability, and we're answering that need for speed with a service that is both economical and comes with all the benefits of partnering with a world-class Internet provider."
ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) technology dramatically increases the capacity of ordinary telephone lines (the local loop) into the home or office, providing faster more cost-effective Internet access compared to traditional ISDN technology. ADSL can share the same line as the telephone, because they use higher frequencies than the voice band.
UUlink ADSL is available at speeds of up to 2.2 Megabits per second downstream (receiving data) and 640 Kilobits per second upstream (sending data). Subscribers will have a constant connection to the Internet through a standard analogue phone line.
UUNET's UUlink ADSL for the small to medium business community is a fully integrated end-to-end Internet access solution. In addition to supplying access, UUNET's introductory service offering includes: registration of one domain name, fully qualified static and routable IP addresses as required, also a modem, a router, 20 e-mail addresses, news readers and one dial-up connection. UUNET monitors the circuit every five minutes and provides technical support 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
The service is currently available in selected parts of Ontario and Quebec.
