New International Consortium Formed To Advance Joint Application Service Provider (ASP) Market Signs Up UUNET As A Founding Member
LAS VEGAS, NEV., May 11, 1999 - Leading technology companies, including UUNET, a division of MCI WorldCom and a global leader in Internet communications solutions, have formed an international advocacy group dedicated to fostering greater understanding of and guidelines for the fast-emerging application service provider segment of the computer industry. Based in Massachusetts, the Application Service Provider Industry Consortium (ASP Industry Consortium) will sponsor research, foster standards and work to articulate the measurable benefits of the evolving ASP delivery model. As one of the founding members, UUNET, through the company's channel program, will be working with the ASPI to determine how to best educate growing businesses about the benefits of hosting applications initiatives. By working in conjunction with an application service provider, businesses can outsource high-powered technology applications instead of having to host those applications on their own servers.
"The application service provider industry will enable small and medium-size companies to incorporate new technology and enhanced applications on a cost-effective basis," said Brad Wise, director of channel sales, UUNET. "As a founding member of the ASPI, we are helping to establish industry guidelines and educate businesses about the benefits of the application service provider marketplace."
In addition to UUNET, the founding members of the ASP Industry Consortium include AT&T, AristaSoft Corporation, Boundless Technologies, Inc., Cisco Systems, Inc., Citrix Systems, Inc., Compaq Computer Corporation, Cylex Systems, Inc., Ernst & Young LLP, Exodus Communications, Inc., FutureLink Corporation, GTE, Great Plains Software, IBM Corporation, JAWS Technologies, Inc., Marimba, Inc., Onyx Software Corporation, SaskTel, Sharp Electronics Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Inc., Telecomputing, Verio, Inc., and Wyse Technology. As a founding member, Brad Wise holds a seat on the ASP Industry Consortium Board of Directors.
