MCI WorldCom Company First to Offer Lower-Cost, Multimegabit Internet Service
ATLANTA, (Networld+Interop), October 22, 1998 UUNET, an MCI WorldCom Company and a global leader in Internet communications solutions, today announced a new ATM T3 service that offers corporate customers lower cost, entry-level multimegabit Internet access. Available immediately to U.S. customers, UUNET's ATM T3 service provides tiered Internet access at bandwidth levels between three and fifteen megabits per second.
"Currently, most Internet customers who need bandwidth greater than 1.5 Mbps must move to one or more high capacity leased-lines, and for many the cost is prohibitive," said Ralph Montfort, director, product marketing. "We've designed the service to be the most cost-effective way for companies to begin using multimegabit services."
To deliver this cost advantage, UUNET's ATM T3 service provides access to UUNET's backbone via the MCI WorldCom ATM network. Because the ATM network is a shared resource, it is more cost-effective than dedicated leased lines. In this way, customers who do not need the guaranteed continuous bandwidth of a dedicated leased line can reap significant savings. In addition to lower monthly service charges, customers also enjoy broader reach of service, lower local loop costs and lower Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) costs.
Pricing and Availability
The service is available immediately in all areas served by MCI WorldCom's ATM network, including New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Offered in 3Mb, 6Mb, 9 Mb, 12Mb and 15 Mb tiers, pricing starts at $4,500 per month for 3 Mb of access, a 25 percent savings over comparable leased line service. In addition, UUNET's ATM T3 service utilizes a Cisco 4500 series router as CPE, a more cost-effective option for multimegabit service than the Cisco 7200 series router UUNET recommends for use with its leased line T3 services.
