What parents need to know about Verizon Family Plus

By: Meg St-Esprit

Keeping an eye on your kids isn’t just knowing where they are—it’s keeping them safe online and off. Verizon Family Plus helps you manage more in one app.

Parenting hasn’t changed, but the world our kids are growing up in has. The challenge isn’t just setting rules, it’s helping them build smart habits that will stick.

Enter Verizon Family Plus, which helps parents walk the line between supervision and independence. It upgrades the Verizon Family app with smarter parental controls, driving insights and a way to temporarily pause the internet when necessary—all from one app.

What is Verizon Family Plus?

The free version of Verizon Family lets you do things like check your kid’s location and who they’re texting over the Verizon network. The “Plus” in Verizon Family Plus helps you set smart digital boundaries without being overbearing. It includes:

  • A Pause Internet button for those moments when “one more minute” turns into three more hours.
  • Driving Insights sent after each trip as a report that shows if your teen was speeding, braking hard or using their phone while driving.
  • Content filters you can adjust as kids grow.
  • Contact monitoring and blocking.
  • Features like Family Line, a single phone number that rings across up to five of your family’s devices, so important calls are more likely to reach someone. **

How much does it cost?

Probably less than your kid’s online gaming habit. The Verizon Family service is free and lets you review Verizon call and text activity, monitor location and see your own driver safety score via the Driving Insights feature. For $14.99 a month, Verizon Family Plus adds premium features —such as enhanced parental controls, roadside assistance and insights about your kid’s driving. And if you’re a Verizon Wireless customer on myPlan (Unlimited Ultimate, Unlimited Plus, Unlimited Welcome or Welcome Unlimited) you can get all the benefits of Verizon Family Plus for just $10 a month through the Verizon Family Plus Perk.

Why parents like Verizon Family Plus

More boundary alerts, because “omw” is up for interpretation. We all want to trust our kids to tell us where they are. But sometimes, their definition of “I’m on my way home” means “I just left and stopped for a snack.”

While the free Verizon Family app gives you one boundary alert, Verizon Family Plus allows for an unlimited amount. So you can know when they get to school, practice, work or the mall for that “quick” trip—without texting them for updates every two hours.

The ability to pause their internet access from your phone, because sometimes “no” needs a backup plan. Parents can also set automatic schedules; block apps; and minimize distractions at bedtime or during school, homework time or any time a digital detox is needed. That way, instead of giving constant reminders, it just happens. And if they really do need the internet for school, you can always turn it back on.

If you prefer to keep things flexible, you can set up custom schedules in the app and opt for push alerts that let you know if your kid is texting or making calls over the Verizon network when they’re supposed to be offline.

Driver Insights, because letting teens drive is a new level of stress. Teens are still learning what safe driving means, so access to real data helps parents have productive conversations about safe driving. Verizon Family Plus shows a post-ride report, indicating if they drive too fast, brake too hard or get in an accident (and get insights into your own driving, too). With an active Verizon Family Plus plan, all your family‑account members get up to four roadside assistance events per membership year, covering things like a tow, flat‑tire help, a jump‑start, or fuel delivery through the app.

Crash detection means you get an alert if they’re in an accident, so you can be the first to check in. And you can still get those insights even if they’re a passenger, so you can find out if their friends or ride-share drivers are driving safely too.

Customizable content filters that change with your kids. Verizon Family Plus lets parents set various content filters tailored to their child. Safe Search helps keep explicit content out of search results. Preset filters for young kids, older kids and teens automatically block age-inappropriate games, videos and social media apps.

Parents can also customize what’s allowed and what’s off-limits. If your 10-year-old is into coding but not quite ready for TikTok, or your teen needs YouTube for school but doesn’t need 24/7 access to gaming sites, you can fine-tune the settings to fit your family.

Family Line, a shared number for critical calls. Family Line** offers a shared number that can ring up to five specific smartphones you choose, all at the same time. Managing your family's schedule is already a juggling act, and missed calls from schools, doctors, or deliveries shouldn’t go unanswered just because one parent is busy.

You’re there for them, so Verizon Family Plus is there for you.

Today’s parental controls don’t just manage screen time or monitor locations; they help families navigate technology in a way that builds trust, encourages independence and keeps everyone connected. That’s exactly what Verizon Family Plus is designed to do.

Setting it up takes just a few minutes. The peace of mind? That lasts a whole lot longer.
