Setting the record straight on AT&T’s promotions: What they say vs. what’s real

Lately, AT&T has been making bold claims in their advertising about the value they offer customers, especially around device promotions and plan pricing. But when you look beyond the headlines and into the fineprint, the reality tells a different story.

We’re setting the record straight, not just because accuracy matters, but because customers deserve transparency when choosing a wireless provider. Here’s a closer look at what AT&T is saying versus what’s actually true:

What AT&T is claiming

  • “Everyone gets” device deals: AT&T’s ads suggest that their device promotions are available to all customers, on all plans.
  • Better value than Verizon: They compare their core plans — Starter, Extra and Premium — to Verizon’s MyPlan, implying that they’re offering more for less.
  • A “Value Plus” plan that beats our Welcome plan: AT&T promotes its Value Plus VL plan as a significantly cheaper alternative to Verizon’s Welcome plan for single-line users.

What’s actually true

  • Device deals aren’t for everyone: AT&T’s own offer details reveal that their promotions are only available on qualifying plans starting at $75.99/month, which excludes their lower-cost Value Plus, VL, and Value Plus Unlimited plans. That’s a far cry from “everyone.”
  • Limited perks, less flexibility: Unlike Verizon’s MyPlan, AT&T’s core plans don’t offer perks customers can add or remove. Their promotions also require trade-ins from only the newest phones (N-3 and newer), adding more friction and narrowing eligibility.
  • “Value Plus” doesn’t tell the whole story: While AT&T’s Value Plus VL plan appears cheaper at first glance, the all-in pricing is similar to Verizon’s Welcome plan, but with a major catch: no device promotions, no perks and limited features. Verizon’s Welcome plan includes access to promotions, entertainment perks, and a better long-term value.

Bottom line

When it comes to wireless plans, the fine print matters. Verizon’s MyPlan offers flexible perks, generous device promotions, and more transparent value. AT&T’s latest advertising might sound good, but we encourage customers and reporters alike to look beyond the slogans and see the full picture.

Because when you do, the choice is clear.
