“Give light and people will find the way.” - Ella Baker
Ella Baker was a civil rights activist, and integral member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Ella committed her life to the betterment of her community fighting for education, equal pay for black teachers and an end to violence against black people. She was the living embodiment of putting knowledge into action in her community.
As V Teamers, we are committed to moving the world forward for all. Our responsible business plan, Citizen Verizon, sponsors several initiatives for minority business owners and children in underfunded schools. By the power of volunteerism, we have the unique opportunity to engage in several company-sponsored events that empower us to be a force for good in our communities.
This month, we can #SeizeTheHour to help others learn more by transcribing history, attending and hosting informational webinars, tutoring students, coaching small black-owned businesses, and sharing stories that celebrate and preserve a more equitable world.
Below are just a few events you can take part in through the Citizen Verizon Volunteers portal:
- Help transcribe records to learn more about the lives of formerly enslaved individuals during the Reconstruction Era. Sponsored by BOLD ERG
- Write or record a message of hope, support and encouragement for the next generation of leaders at Southern University and A&M College. Sponsored by BOLD ERG
- Participate in a service walk and litter pickup event empowering individuals to build community, connections and support a more beautiful planet. Sponsored by BOLD ERG
- Share your career experience, insights, and advice on achieving success with Verizon Innovative Learning students
- Share your success stories with youth through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America organization.
Let us know how you plan to participate in these or other events. Send your stories and pictures to Good@Verizon.com so we might share them with the V Team.
